The westward view at ground zero, where the framework of the south pool is under construction above the PATH tracks.
Of all the right angles that have been built at ground zero in the last three years, of all the places where steel meets steel at 90 degrees, there is no more meaningful angle right now than the one poised high over the PATH tracks near Fulton Street.
The westward view at ground zero, where the framework of the south pool is under construction above the PATH tracks.
It visibly defines one corner of the north pool of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum and, therefore, one corner of the outline of 1 World Trade Center — a void left in the city fabric after the attack of Sept. 11, 2001.
“Sculptors talk about how the sculpture is already in the stone and all they’re doing is chipping away at it,” said Michael Arad, the architect who won the memorial design competition in 2004, with the landscape architect Peter Walker. “This is the opposite. Our void is already there. It’s there in the sky. And we’re building around it.”
“It’s great to see the faintest contours beginning to emerge,” he said.

Grabbing a burger from the grill in her backyard, Caitlin Langone, 17, flops onto a chair. Her brother Brian, 15, carefully trims a piece of fat from a chicken kebab.
"That's exactly how your father did it," JoAnn Langone tells her son. "Cutting up food into little pieces. Just like a Langone."
Tommy Langone has been gone for five years, but at moments like this, he seems to be back. Or when Brian moves his hands while speaking. Or when Caitlin talks in great bursts, barely pausing for a breath.
"Slow down, Caitlin," her mom says.
Or the way both kids perk up whenever they hear a siren. "Ambulance," they announce in unison. Sometimes it's so far away that their mom can't hear anything, and they have to tell her how it sounds.
At the Langone house, time is divided -- before Sept. 11 and after. Before the collapse of the Twin Towers that killed their father, a police officer, and their uncle, Peter Langone, a firefighter, Caitlin and Brian use to love dinnertime. Tommy, who specialized in rescue work, would come home to Williston Park and delight them with tales of saving people from car crashes and elevator accidents.

She died at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at Fire Station No. 56 after spending her last day on the job, Capt. Jim Doucette said.
Ana was born on July 4, 1995, and was the first nationally certified Fire Department Disaster Search canine.
She was known for her rescue work in disaster situations such as Ground Zero at the World Trade Center, Hurricane Katrina and three building collapses in Sacramento.
Ana, who was also the first dog certified by the Search Dog Foundation, had officially retired from the fire department in February.
Ana was featured in the media on several occasions, including appearances in the book "Dog Heroes of September 11th," and on National Geographic, "Animal Planet" and CNN.

Scores of Foxboro men and women who have served in the military since Sept. 11, 2001 were honored Tuesday during the annual Veterans Day observances in the America Legion hall.
"They have put their nation's interest before their own and have asked for little in return," said Rep. Jay Barrows, referring to all who served in the military since the nation's founding.
Town historian Jack Authelet reminded listeners in the packed hall that Veterans Day is celebrated on the 11th day of the 11th month, originally to commemorate the Armistice that ended World War I 90 years ago.

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- A Yemeni man accused of being an aide to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and making propaganda videos was sentenced to life in prison by a U.S. military commission at Guantanamo Bay yesterday.
Ali Hamza Ahmad Suliman al-Bahlul was found guilty by a jury of military officers of conspiracy, solicitation to commit murder and providing material support for terrorism, the U.S. Defense Department said.
It was the second trial of a so-called enemy combatant at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, after bin Laden's former driver Salim Hamdan was found guilty in August of supporting terrorism. Civil rights campaigners have criticized the system of military commissions, saying it fails to protect the rights of defendants.
